She made her breakthough in 1964 when she stood in for Leontyn Price ( Il Trovatore, Royal Opera House production ).
But it was her Wagner roles ( Bayreuth Festivals in the late 1960s, early 70s ) which made her that famous. She is a darling in Vienna and this autograph is from 1978 there.

She was made a Dame of the British Empire in 1986."

Vaclav Havel, born 1936 in Prague was always very close to the intellectual and artist community in Czechoslovakia.
As an outcome of the Second World War Czechoslovakia fell under Soviet Russian and Communist domination in 1948 with serious effects on Havel's family. Vaclav Havel worked as a laboratory technician and took night classes to finish high school. As he grew into manhood he showed signs of dissent against the Czech Communist authorities' ongoing suppression of artistic and literary freedoms.

Havel was somewhat involved in the Prague Spring of 1968, an episode where Czech intellectuals enthusiastically supported moves, then being sponsored by Alexander Dubcek, for a liberalizing reform of the Czech Communist system.

A Soviet invasion of August 1968 suppressed the Prague Spring. Havel protested with the result that the authorities banned his works. The authorities offered him several opportunities to leave the country but he declined as he had decided to remain in Czechoslovakia and work for change holding the view that 'the solution of this human situation does not lie in leaving it.'

In 1977 he helped orchestrate and produce Charter 77, a document supported by hundreds of Czech intellectuals, that demanding that Czech citizens be afforded basic human rights such as had seemed to be promised in the Helsinki Agreements.......

Artist Hans Sussenbeck was designer for posters, postcards, magazines. Monarchist before WWII, politically right during the Nazi regime � and awarded with States honors afterwards. German actor Emil Jannings made his professional stage debut at 18. In 1906 he was invited to join Max Reinhardt's theater in Berlin.
In 1927 Paramount signed him and he moved to Hollywood. Jannings won the very first Best Actor Academy Award for his first two American films, The Last Command (1928) and The Way of All Flesh (1927). Because of his thick German accent, the advent of sound ended his American career. He returned to Germany in 1929.
When the Nazis came to power in 1933, he was enlisted to participate in the state's propaganda machine. At war's end Jannings was blacklisted by the Allied authorities, and he never made another film. He died five years later, lonely and bitter. Fritz Wendhausen was a popular film director in the 1920-40s. His Peer Gynt, was rather an adaptation of of Ibsen's motifs which presented ideology and propaganda of that time though."

Maria Cebotari was discovered by Count Alexander Virubov. The bot married and moved to Paris and later Berlin. Cebotari took singing lessons and in 1931 Fritz Busch took her to Berlin. 1941 Bruno Walter engaged her for performances at the Salzburger Festspiele.

Winters signed a Columbia Pictures contract in 1943, mostly playing bits except when loaned to United Artists for an important role in Knickerbocker Holiday (1944). The breakthrough came with her role as a "good time" girl murdered by insane stage star Ronald Colman in A Double Life (1947).
